“Chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken! Lay a little egg for me!”
This is one of our favourite circle times to do with the children in Nursery.
Before we start to play and create, we look at the hen’s egg. Talk about the shape of the egg (oval), the colour of the egg (brown) and how it feels (smooth). Crack open the egg and look at what the egg is like inside the shell. Talk about the name of the yolk and the white. Boil an egg and then cut it open when it has cooled. How has the white and yolk changed?
Search on YouTube and search ‘chick hatching out of an egg’ and we watch a video.
Look at the features of a chick – the yellow feathers, two eyes, two legs, beak. We look at the shapes/sizes we can see on the chick. Eg; small circle for the head and a big circle for the body, a triangle for the beak.
At the craft table we give the children opportunities to create their own chick using a variety of materials.
Drawing/Painting – you might choose to draw/paint your chick using markers/colouring pencils/crayons/paint. You could add tissue paper or feathers to your chick for some texture.
Painting a rock – when you are out for a walk or have a look in your garden and see if you can find a rock. Paint it and add the features of the chick.
A chick on a stick! – when you are out for a walk or look in your garden and see if you can find a stick. Did you find a long one or a short one? Draw a chick onto some yellow paper/card and cut it out. Attach your chick to the stick using sellotape. Now you have a wee chick that can jump and fly about!
