Retelling the story of 'The Three Little Pigs'

29th Apr 2020

Retelling stories is an important pre-reading and pre-writing skill. Using Traditional Tales, like ‘The Three Little Pigs’ is brilliant as there is always a repetitive phrase/phrases used throughout. This helps with the recall and retelling through play. In Nursery we add in the props to encourage the children to recall and retell elements of a story together through their play.

The importance of retelling stories is that it allows children to learn to organise and describe events, which enhances reading comprehension. ... Retelling stories helps children begin to understand sequence, plot, and characterisation as they build vocabulary and comprehension skills.

What you Need: 3 houses, 3 pigs (if you don’t have 3 pigs, use whatever play people you have and pretend they are the pigs) and a wolf (I didn’t have a wolf, but I found a dog instead!)

If you have a copy of ‘The Three Little Pigs’, read through it together.

Alternatively, go onto Youtube and type in ‘The three little pigs’ and you will get the story there.

Talk about who is in the story and gather up your characters.

Can you remember what the first/second/third little pig bought to make their house? Straw, sticks and bricks.

What did the pigs say when the big bad wolf wanted into their house? “No, not by the hair on my chinny chin, chin, I’ll not let you in!”

What did the big bad wolf reply? “Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house in!”

Set up your houses for play – I used the houses that we had made in the previous house building activity!

Read and watch the story as many times as you like and have lots of fun retelling the story!

Hope you all have fun retelling the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. Let us know how you get on by sending through a message on seesaw.

I’ve also added a document to the ‘home learning’ section of the website that has colouring pages that you can print off if you wish.

You don’t have to carry out all of the activity, just do what you can manage.

Have fun and stay safe!
